First Guide Version Designed: June 2005
Guide Updated & Distributed: February 2009
projectOPEN was conceived in 2005 to assist homeless populations in various communities throughout the US by providing a guide to meet four objectives:
- The guide includes a list and map of organizations who specialize in services for the homeless.
- The guide helps to locate services available to all citizens within a city that homeless people can utilize for free.
- The guide includes a section on both personal rights and laws to encourage social education and to encourage people to follow the law.
- The guide is portable and can be displayed as a poster to raise awareness about homelessness.
In February 2009 the BRUTE LABs team decided to build on what was started by the original projectOPEN team by pursuing a grant from UCLA to get the guides updated, printed and distributed for the first time. We identified and contracted with a local Los Angeles based printing company to print 1000 of the guides. We then traveled to Santa Monica and distributed maps to over 30 organizations in the Santa Monica area.
Nearly everyone we spoke to was thrilled about the project and the quality of the guide. Many offered support and guidance to our team for future initiatives.
