How long should each RUN! session be?
This can be determined by you and your school. If the students don't have a dedicated time for gym or recess, we recommend giving them at least 20-30 minutes to complete the session.
How many RUN! stations should we set up? Should we divide the activity class-by-class or conduct the session with the entire school?
Schools can determine what best fits their needs for this program. Depending on the number of students participating and the number of teachers/parents that are able to assist with facilitating the project, you may want to group all classes together. If the group is too large, you may want to consider breaking the students into smaller, more manageable groups.
How do students earn points?
Each student gains points based on the following: number of miles run + number of extra laps run + personal records. For example, let's say a student runs the mile 4 times, does a total of 12 extra laps, and achieves a personal record 2 times. The points for this student would be 4+12+2=18.
How can a student achieve a personal record?
Personal records are achieved each time a students beats his/her previously recorded mile time. For example, a student that finished the mile in 13 minutes during their first RUN! session might improve their time to 12 minutes and 30 seconds during the second RUN! session. In our effort to encourage students to continue to build upon their fitness goals, this student would receive an additional point for achieving a "personal record" and increase his/her chances of winning a prize.
What does our school get to keep?
Everything. Any material provided to you in the RUN! box can be utilized by your school until those resources are exhausted. All we ask is that your return completed tracking sheets to us at the end of the project. Materials like the pedometers can be given to the students permanently or kept by the school for future use.
Will a member of BRUTE LABS pick up the tracking sheets at the end of the project?
At the end of the project, you can send us the tracking sheets in any of the following ways:
- Complete the online version of the tracking sheet (requires a Google Account, then File > Make a copy) and share it with run@brutelabs.org
- Scan and email them to run@brutelabs.org
- Fax them to (650) 618-2796
- Mail them to BRUTE LABS, 902 Corbett Ave #3, San Francisco, CA*
*If you mail the tracking sheets, please copy them and mail us the copies, just in case they're lost in the mail)
Can our school qualify for the RUN! project next year?
We are working to secure funds to continue the RUN! project moving forward. We'd love to partner with you to raise funds for future RUN! programs at your school or in your community. Interested parties can donate on our RUN! website at brutelabs.org/run to help keep the RUN! project going.
During sessions can the students to choose to walk or run?
The students can walk or run, as long as they work towards completing the mile on at least four separate occasions as part of the project. Remember, our primary goal is to help children get excited about being active.
How long after you pick up the data before we get the results of who the winner is?
We will share the winner names with you and deliver the iPods within one week of receiving tracking sheets for your school.
Can we conduct more than four RUN! sessions?
By all means. We hope that all participating schools will continue to work towards encouraging their kids to be active and make healthy lifestyle choices.
When does the RUN! program end?
There is no concrete end date for RUN!. We'd love to see schools continue to host sessions and encourage their students to get active. However, for the purposes of the contest, we ask that all four RUN! sessions be completed before students go on their 2010 Summer break.
